The Yo-Yo Kid
Here's something that we can all be grateful
for - we don't need to be born with talent to
become excellent at anything! In fact, science
has now shown that world class achievements
do not come from inborn talent. I wrote a
Create Success newsletter on this research
last July. You can read it here:
How To Become a Master
In the "Science of Getting Rich" we read that if
you don't have talent, you can develop it because
we all have a small amount of talent for anything
that we can grow into mastery. Isn't that wonderful?
We are not limited by some random distibution of
talent to the favored few.
Let me give you a real life example of this which
illustrates the things that are required to become
excellent. Let me introduce you to Stirling Quinn.
Quinn is a 13 year old kid in Seattle, Washington
who at age 11 happened to get to watch the
contestants at the Northwest yo-yo championships.
He's been fooling around with a yo-yo for a couple
of months so he entered the beginners division and
took third. That's lesson #1 - courage.
A year later he came back and won the Open title for
the region and got signed by a manufacturer. Beginner
to pro in one year! How did he do it? One of the other
yo-yo club members remembers that Quinn would ask
for help with a routine and then "Every time he came
back, he'd know everything we taught him the previous
session and would have made it his own." Quinn
practiced 4 hours a day, every day, to make that
progress. That's lesson #2 - persistence, dedication.
But how about talent? The other club member says
that's not it. "I don't sense any more natural talent in
Sterling than in anybody else. It's just he loves it. He
has that little-kid, totally unbridled joy for yo-yoing,
and it shows....yo-yoing is his passion." That's
lesson #3 - do what you love!
Isn't that amazing? We don't have to worry about
becoming excellent at something we don't like. The
Universe is organized to help us do what we love!
And if we love something we know that we can
become excellent at it. We don't have to worry
about whether we were born with the talent. All we
have to do is this 3-step process:
1. Decide what we love!
2. Be courageous about stepping out into new territory
3. Apply dedication and persistence to developing the
skills.
The Universe is there to help us do what we love, and
to do it well. That is something that we can all be
grateful for!
So, are you doing what you love?
