What Have You Done For Me Lately?
There's lessons on gratitude everywhere, and this week I
got one from a joke. Last Sunday my minister wife and
I were on a hour and a half drive to a church where she
was the guest speaker. We were listening Prairie Home
Companion, the "Lake Wobegon" show, on the radio and
they were doing a whole show of jokes.
Here's the one that inspired me:
"A lady and her small son are walking along by the sea
shore, enjoying the sand and surf, when suddenly a large
wave crashes in and washes the boy out to sea.
In panic, the woman turns her face to the sky and
screams. 'God, you can't do this! He's my only boy
and I love him more than life itself. Give him back!'
Another wave crashes in and deposits the boy at her feet.
The lady grabs him excitedly, hugs him and brushes him
off. Then she turns her face to the sky again and yells
angrily, 'Wait a minute, God. Where's his hat?'"
Isn't that what we often find ourselves doing? We always
remember to ask, but then we neglect to be grateful. It's
as if we're saying to God, "So what have you done for me
lately?" The past blessings don't seem to count.
Take a moment right now and write down 10 gratitudes.
Be especially grateful for the things you take for granted.
You're alive, you're breathing, you have food, clothing
and shelter. What are some of the blessings that you
may have forgotton to appreciate? Who are some of
the people that you may have forgotten to appreciate?
Cultivate your "attitude of gratitude" and watch the list
of things you have to be grateful for grow!
As for me, I'm grateful for computers, the internet, email
and for each and every one of you that I have gotten to
know through their help!
Many blessings to you,
Wes
